Fluency Requirements for French Citizenship

To become a French citizen, you’ll need to be able to prove that you are fluent in French at B1 level (CERL) or higher.

There are 3 tests that adults can take to obtain an official certificate:

  • DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française)

  • TCF (Test de connaissance du français)

  • TEF (Test d’évaluation du français)

Each of the tests will assess your proficiency in French in all 4 core language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
